7 Signs You Need New Windows (Before They Start Costing You Money)

You need new windows if you notice any of these: rising energy bills without increased usage, drafts near closed frames, foggy glass between panes, windows that won’t open or lock, excessive outside noise, fading furniture near windows, or single-pane windows older than 20 years. Any two or more of these signs together is a strong indicator that replacement will pay for itself — the U.S. Department of Energy estimates average savings of $420/year for Southern California homes that replace old single-pane windows with modern triple-pane units.

Most homeowners don’t know their windows are failing until the energy bill arrives. But windows give clear warning signs before they quietly drain your wallet. Here are 7 things to look for — and what to do if you spot them in your Orange County home.

Sign 1: Your Energy Bills Keep Climbing

If your heating and cooling costs are rising but your usage hasn’t changed, your windows are a likely culprit. Up to 30% of a home’s heating and cooling loss escapes through windows and doors — and old or compromised windows make that number worse every year.

Here’s why: old single-pane windows have a U-Factor (heat transfer rate) of around 1.10. That means they provide almost no insulation — heat pours out in winter and pours in during summer. Modern triple-pane windows reach a U-Factor of 0.13–0.19, which is 5–8x more efficient.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that switching from old single-pane to high-efficiency windows saves the average Southern California homeowner around $420 per year on energy costs (DOE Energy Saver, 2024).

That’s not a small number. Over 10 years, that’s $4,200 back in your pocket — before accounting for energy price increases.

Sign 2: You Feel Drafts Near Closed Windows

Put your hand near a window frame that you know is closed and latched. Do you feel moving air?

If yes, the seal has failed somewhere — between the frame and the wall, between the sash and the frame, or in the weatherstripping. Even a small gap drives significant energy loss, and no amount of caulk will permanently fix a frame that’s warped or a seal that’s deteriorated.

Drafts also mean your HVAC system is working harder than it should to maintain temperature, which shortens its lifespan on top of inflating your bills.

Sign 3: Condensation Forms Between the Panes

Foggy or cloudy glass between the panes — not on the surface — is one of the most definitive signs a window has failed.

Double and triple-pane windows have inert gas (usually argon) sealed between the panes. That gas provides a significant portion of the insulation value. When the seal fails, the gas escapes, moisture enters, and you get the fogging you can’t wipe off.

Once that seal is gone, it won’t come back. The insulation value of that unit has been substantially reduced, and the only fix is replacing the glass unit or the entire window.

If you see fogging between panes on more than one window, it’s often more cost-effective to replace the affected windows now than to do them one at a time as they fail.

Sign 4: Windows Are Hard to Open, Close, or Lock

Vinyl and wood frames expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Over time, they can warp, swell, or develop buildup that makes them difficult to operate.

A window that won’t open easily when you need ventilation is an inconvenience. A window that won’t lock securely is a security and insurance issue.

Beyond the operational problem, a window that doesn’t close and seal tightly every time is leaking air and energy even when it appears shut.

Sign 5: You Can Hear Everything Outside

Southern California is not a quiet place — traffic, neighbors, landscaping crews, aircraft. If your bedroom or living room brings in all of that sound, your windows are functioning as thin glass barriers rather than proper acoustic buffers.

Single-pane windows have almost no sound attenuation. Even basic double-pane windows make a noticeable difference. Triple-pane windows with proper seals reduce exterior noise dramatically.

One of our customers in Lakewood put it directly after having 12 windows and a french door replaced: “My home is very sound proof now.”

It’s not uncommon for homeowners to describe this as the most immediately noticeable change after installation — before they even see the energy bill difference.

Sign 6: Your Furniture, Flooring, or Artwork Is Fading

Regular glass transmits a significant portion of UV radiation. That UV is what fades your hardwood floors, bleaches your upholstery, and degrades your artwork and window treatments over time.

Low-E (low-emissivity) glass — standard on every Tesla Windows product — has a microscopic metallic coating that reflects UV and infrared radiation while still letting in visible light. Your rooms stay bright, but the UV that causes fading is blocked at the glass.

If you’ve noticed fading in areas near windows and you don’t have low-E glass, you’re watching the UV damage accumulate every day.

Sign 7: Your Windows Are Over 20 Years Old

This one is straightforward: even if your old windows show no visible damage, they are significantly less efficient than what modern windows deliver.

Most homes built before 2000 have single-pane or early double-pane windows that don’t meet current ENERGY STAR® standards. ENERGY STAR’s requirements for Southern California’s climate zone call for a U-Factor of 0.27 or lower. Old single-pane windows sit at 1.10 — four times worse than the minimum standard.

Age also means hardware, weatherstripping, and frame integrity have degraded — often in ways that aren’t visible until they’re already affecting performance.

If your windows predate 2005, there’s a strong argument for replacing them on efficiency grounds alone, regardless of condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many windows does the average house need replaced?

Most single-family homes in Orange County have 10–20 windows. The exact number depends on the home’s size and layout. Our in-home specialist counts every opening during the free measurement appointment.

How long does window replacement take?

Most OC homes are fully installed in one day. A home with 10–15 windows typically takes a crew 6–8 hours from arrival to cleanup. We haul away every old window — you don’t need to do anything.

Does window replacement require a permit in California?

It depends on the scope of work. Replacing windows in existing openings (same size) often doesn’t require a permit in many California jurisdictions. If your project does require one, we pull it — permit handling is included in our service.

Can I just replace the fogged windows and not all of them?

Yes. You don’t have to do all windows at once. That said, volume discounts often make it more economical to do more windows together — and a mixed installation (some old, some new) will be visible from outside.

How accurate is the online estimate?

Our online tool gives a ballpark range based on window type and quantity. It’s typically within 10–15% of the final price. An exact quote requires measuring your actual openings in person, which we do at the free in-home appointment.
